Here are steps I recommend doing AT LEAST every six months:
1. Make sure your anti-virus is up to date and do a full scan2. Check your browser plugins (all browsers, not just the one you use, ie: Firefox, Chrome, Internet explorer)

3. Run "Windows Update" until there is no updates.
4. Open Adobe Reader and click "help" and click "check for updates"
Remember, unpached computers not only put your computer at risk, it puts others at risk if it is taken over and it also puts any sensitive information stored (credit, identity you get the idea) at risk.
One last note, Apple computers are also at risk and you can do step 2 to help lower your risk.
